LE TAN MINH

Founder - Managing Director

Chair design exemplifies the interdisciplinary nature of architecture, showcasing architects’ ability to adapt skills and sensibilities across scales and contexts, blurring lines between architecture, design, and art. This versatility empowers architects to explore new ideas and challenge conventional notions of chair aesthetics, materials, and technology. The Architect’s Chair Competition is an annual international design competition hosted by the competition organizer Buildner. It invites architects and designers worldwide to submit designs for a signature chair. Following in the footsteps of iconic figures like Charles and Ray Eames, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer, and Arne Jacobsen, participants are tasked with creating custom chairs that reflect their unique design philosophies and visions.

The characteristics and challenges of chair design

A finely crafted chair embodies ergonomic principles, offering impeccable support and ensuring sustained comfort over extended periods. Visually, it harmonizes with its environment, employing exquisite materials, refined forms, and meticulous finishes to elevate the ambiance of any space it inhabits. For architects, involvement in chair design serves as a vital extension of their creative repertoire, allowing exploration of innovative materials and techniques on a more intimate scale. By shaping chairs, architects not only refine spatial dynamics but also impart a distinctive architectural ethos to everyday furnishings, enriching the user experience through seamless integration into their designed environments. Among the criteria used to evaluate submissions to this competition are: Functionality, Comfort, Aesthetics, Signature style, Material quality, Craftsmanship, Versatility, Sustainability.

Functionality

Chair functionality revolves around how well it fulfills its intended role. This includes ergonomic design for comfort during prolonged use, ease of adjustment, and adaptability to different environments, ensuring practicality and efficiency.

Comfort

Comfort is paramount, focusing on providing a supportive and pleasant seating experience. Factors such as ergonomic shaping, quality padding, and lumbar support contribute to creating a chair that promotes relaxation and well-being.

Aesthetics

Chair aesthetics emphasize visual appeal and artistic expression. Through careful consideration of form, color, texture, and proportion, designers craft chairs that not only serve a functional purpose but also enhance the ambiance of any space they occupy.

Signature style

A designer’s signature style is characterized by unique elements that distinguish their work. It encompasses recurring themes, distinctive materials, and innovative design approaches that reflect their artistic vision and creative identity.

Material quality

The quality of materials used in chair construction influences its durability, comfort, and aesthetic appeal. By selecting premium materials such as solid woods, metals, or sustainable fabrics, designers ensure chairs that are not only visually appealing but also built to last.

Craftsmanship

Chair design can emphasize a meticulous attention to detail and skillful execution in manufacturing. From precise joinery and impeccable finishing to the integration of advanced techniques, craftsmanship ensures chairs of superior quality and longevity.

Versatility

Chairs are often adaptable for use across different settings and user needs. Chairs designed with versatility in mind offer features like modular components, adjustable settings, and stackability, allowing them to seamlessly fit into various environments while meeting diverse functional requirements.

Sustainability

The importance of sustainability in chair design cannot be overstated. As global awareness of environmental issues grows, designers and manufacturers are increasingly focusing on sustainable practices to minimize ecological impact. Sustainable chair design involves using renewable or recycled materials, reducing carbon footprints during production and transportation, and ensuring products are durable and recyclable at the end of their lifespan. By prioritizing sustainability, designers not only contribute to environmental conservation but also respond to consumer demand for eco-friendly products. Sustainable chair design aligns with ethical and responsible practices, fostering a greener future while meeting the needs of present generations without compromising those of future ones.
